Step 1: Brainstorm Areas of Focus
Make a copy of the worksheet, then fill it out to organize your ideas.
The first step is to brainstorm different areas of focus for your coaching program.
When completed, check the box:
1
Brainstorm Areas of Focus
Step 2: Choose an Area of Focus
After brainstorming ideas about the kind of coaching program you want to build, choose the one you want to work on right now. Everything after this step should fit within the area of coaching you choose.
When completed, check the box:
2
Choose an Area of Focus
Step 3: Brainstorm Your Ideal Client
Brainstorm ways to describe the ideal client for the program you want to build. The goal is to be clear so you and others can KNOW who the program is for and who it isn't for.
Here's a bad example: everyone (too vague. There's no such thing as a program for everyone)
Here's another bad example: parents (still too vague)
Here's a good example: parents who want to help their ADHD teenagers succeed in school (also acceptable: "parents of ADHD children")
When completed, check the box:
3
Brainstorm My Ideal Client
Step 4: Describe Your Ideal Client
After brainstorming ideas about your ideal client, choose one description you have the most confidence to move forward with. Everything after this step should be catered to helping this kind of client.
When completed, check the box:
4
Describe My Ideal Client
Step 5: Brainstorm Problems & Solutions
Brainstorm at least 5 different problems your ideal clients experience and your solutions for those problems. Organize these in a table, with each problem its own row.
When completed, check the box:
5
Brainstorm Problems & Solutions
Step 6: Evaluate Your Solutions
When completed, check the box:
6
Evaluate My Problems & Solutions
Step 7: Confirm You're Ready to Go
At this point, you should have the following ready to go:
- Your Area of Focus
- A description of your ideal client
- 3 great ideas for solving problems your ideal clients experience (and which fit within your area of focus)
If you are missing any of these elements, review the previous steps and keep working on them until you do.
Gauge Your Passion
Before continuing, we want to "check" one other thing to evaluate if this program is shaping into something you WANT to do. Answer the following questions honestly:
- Is this a kind of coaching you want to do?
- Do you want to coach these types of clients?
- Are you passionate about (or excited by) the subject matter, what your clients will do, and how you will help them do it?
If your answer is "yes" to all of these questions, there's no need to consider further. You're headed in the right direction: go ahead and move on to the next module. 🙂
If you have any no's, you may want to consider revisiting the previous steps. If you still think it's good enough, then proceed. But if you feel like something's off, we recommend creating another copy of the brainstorm worksheet and starting over, with the aim of focusing where your passion is stronger.
When you've found a good match for the passion you have inside, proceed to the next step.
***Important note: it's often true that people have passion for many different things, and that's good! ANY of those passions are valid and a great place from which to start coaching. Moving past this step does NOT mean you will never coach other subjects or types of clients. This isn't a lifelong commitment. We simply want to help you build a coaching program that you will love and not waste time with something you aren't passionate about. If you KNOW you have multiple options and you are passionate about them all, we recommend starting with the option you are most confident with. A good rule-of-thumb is you want about 80% confidence in the direction you're headed. If so, you are DEFINITELY good to proceed.Â
